Our base chakra located at the base of our spine is the foundation of our energy. It represents our stability and security in life and is the connection to our physical body as well as the earth that supports us.

A solid foundation is essential in connecting to, and opening our other 6 energetic centres (chakras) in our bodies. 

For children is it important to help build their awareness of their own physical and bodily sensations (interoception skills) as well as build secure attachment. 

Let’s feel stable and grounded with these kid friendly yoga poses:

base chakra mountain pose

Mountain Pose – Our feet are facing forwards slightly apart and we send our energy into the ground for support from mother earth. With a straight back, our head reaches tall into the clouds, our shoulders are rolled-back and down with our arms slightly distanced from our sides, hands outstretched to feel the energy buzzing out from our fingers.

Tree Post – Sending roots out from our feet and toes into the ground, we lift up strongly on one leg as our trunk, pulling in our core tummy muscles to help support us. Our other leg lifts lightly with foot touching ankle, calf or thigh whilst our hands gently support our upper body by pressing together in front of our heart space. Grow the crown of the tree towards the sun and if you’re feeling strong and energized, lift your arms as branches of the trees out in a ‘v’ and even gently quiver your hands as the breeze brushes through the leaves of the tree.

Frog Pose – We start standing with legs a little wider than hip distance apart, feet turn outward. Let’s take a deep breath in as we circle our arms above our head, joining our hands as they travel down to our heart and bending our knees to reach a squat. Pause as a ladybug would do on a leaf, before reaching both hands to the ground to prepare for our 3-2-1 ribbit jumps!! And repeat…

Child’s Pose – Let’s now lower to the floor and sit on your heels with your knees together or spread apart. Gently lower your body to let your head rest on the ground in front of you or on a pillow and allow your arms to fold down either side of you or stretch your arms in front with your palms faced down. Take 3 deep breaths in and out feeling the movement up and down your spine.

BASE CHAKRA AFFIRMATION: I AM SAFE AND PROTECTED An affirmation is a great way to help embed the feelings within the body as they create these yoga poses.
